College counselors form a college group and take the college application process on an emotional level.

College Counselors Start College Prep Group

College counselors Ms. Strand and Ms. Meredith take college struggles head on with a group of students to show them how college isn’t so bad.

Ms. Strand and Ms. Meredith have put together a group of selected students to talk through the college application process, how to access financial aid, how to be successful in college, and also process hopes and fears for college. They are holding four sessions, one on each Thursday from November 10 – December 8.

“Our goal is to help students set their own goals and gain knowledge to be successful in planning and preparing for college,” Ms. Meredith said.

The counselors want to go beyond just the applications and getting into college. They want to prepare students for a future and the biggest step they’re going to take yet. It can cause anxiety and stress like no other, and they just want to be there for them.

“We selected a set of students who wanted and needed help in this process, we don’t want to ignore the social and emotional aspect that comes from college planning,” Meredith said.

The college application process can be difficult. There can be a lot of anxiety and stress involved as students apply and get ready to actually move on to college.

“For our first meeting we dissected the application process and the steps for applying,” senior Annalee Watson said, “[to] better understand the application process for future applications [as we apply to] bigger colleges.”

Truly understanding the process can really help with the stress of future steps into college.

“Since we only have had one group so far, they haven’t really gone into the emotional aspect, But I definitely think there will be a lot of [the emotional aspect] in the future because it is very stressful,” Watson said.
